Body Hair Removal

For thousands of years, people have been shaving and waxing their hair to get a clean and neat look which in turn makes hair growing thicker and faster.

Lasers are the newest introduction into hair removal arena which provides long term, silky-smooth results. It is a medical procedure where the hair follicle is damaged using the heat generated by an intense beam of light. Laser targets the pigment called melanin that gives colour to human hair, eyes and skin. Therefore, it is important to selectively target the melanin in hair without damaging the skin around it, especially in darker skin types.

We take special care to protect the skin by using specialist lasers for different skin types. We do not use IPL for hair removal as it is less effective with higher risk of skin damage. We use different lasers for different skin types, i.e. Alexandrite laser for lighter skins types and Nd:YAG laser for darker skin types. Combining the superior latest laser technology with fully trained and qualified practitioners increases the effectiveness and reduces the risks associated with treatments.

Laser is most effective at the Anagen (Growth) stage when the hair is completely attached to the blood supply. Six to Eight sessions of laser hair removal are required to destroy the 80-90% follicles at Anagen stage. It takes around two weeks for treated hairs to be shed, followed by a re-growth phase of around four weeks, therefore treatments are set 4-6 weeks apart.

How long does the procedure take?

Each pulse of the laser takes a fraction of a second. Duration of the procedure completely depends on the size of the area under treatment. Small areas can be treated within 15 minutes, while the larger areas, such as the back or legs, may take over an hour. During the free initial consultation, our practitioners will be able to give you and exact time length for your procedure.

Is it painful?

During the laser hair removal procedure, intense heat in transferred thorough the body of the hair to destroy the hair follicle. This process can be painful if the right technology is not used. Here at Aesthetiq, we use the latest ‘Gentle Max Pro’ laser from Candela which is equipped with Cryogen Gas cooling system to protect the skin and reduce the discomfort. Cryogen gas is spayed onto the skin moments before the laser is fired, reducing the temperature to 358F. Due to this technology the discomfort is reduced to a minimum. Aloe Vera gel is applied straight after the treatment to provide the soothing effect.

What is the recovery time?

There is no down time for laser hair removal. You might experience a mild erythema on the treated area which will go away within 2-3 hours.

How should I prepare for the treatment?

Avoid plucking, electrolysis and waxing for six weeks before the treatment. Skin should be shaven and thoroughly cleansed. Sun exposure should also be avoided both before treatment as it makes laser hair removal less effective and makes complications after treatment more likely. Before treatment, you will have a patch test to determine which laser can produce the safest, most effective results for your skin type. Longer wavelength lasers suit darker skin as they go deeper which bypasses melanin to avoid causing burns.

When will I notice results?

Due to the hair regrowth cycle, results will start taking place around 3 weeks following your treatment. Results of laser hair removal are noticeable most often after the first treatment, however this varies with skin and hair type.

What should I expect after my treatment?

You should expect swelling in the hair follicle, which is a normal occurrence due to the laser destroying the follicle. Also, a small amount of pain and discomfort should be expected, including itching, however you can expect to be given a prescription for a topical antiseptic cream to be applied after treatment to ease this pain.

Is there any aftercare required?

Yes - no self-tanning within a two-week period of the procedure. Prevent sun exposure by applying sun block. In the first few days after treatment, don’t scrub or rinse the treated areas with abrasive skin cleansers.

What are the possible side effects?

Redness and slight burning sensation are common after straight after treatment. Skin burning, blisters and skin pigmentation can occur if the wrong lasers are used or skin is not protected from the heat by cooling it down. As mentioned above, we use different lasers for different skin types as well as the latest cooling technology reducing the side effects to a minimum.
